The speciality vehicles sector includes about 4,500 CAW members manufacturing heavy trucks, buses, railway and transit equipment, and other specialized transportation equipment and machinery.
This sector of our union has experienced some of the most bitter plant closures anywhere in our union in recent years: including the recent loss of four major plants in Ontario: the Freightliner and Navistar heavy truck plants, the Electro-Motive locomotive facility, and the Orion Bus plant.
Nevertheless, the remaining CAW-represented facilities in this sector contribute to an important and often underappreciated segment of Canada's manufacturing base. The broader construction and mining equipment sector has been growing in Canada, offering many opportunities for organizing new union members.
