The CAW represents around 1,000 members in the shipbuilding industry. Membership numbers tend to rise and fall like the tides on the Bay of Fundy - depending on economic conditions and major contracts.Fortunately, the future looks much brighter for the industry thanks to the federal government's National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy.
The CAW became represented in this sector through the merger of the Marine Workers' Federation (MWF) in 1996.
Most of our current active members in the sector work in two major shipyards: the Halifax Shipyard(owned by the Irving conglomerate) and the Marystown shipyard (owned by Kiewit Offshore Services). A smaller repair operation in Shelburne is also represented by the CAW.
Show your support for CAW members in Nova Scotia who are campaigning to secure billions in important new shipbuilding work for the Halifax shipyard.
