Hospitality and Gaming
The CAW represents over 15,000 members working in the diverse hospitality and gaming sector.
Our membership in the sector is divided into three broad categories. Over one-third of our members work in hotels - including major chains (like Fairmont and Delta) and stand-alone facilities. Another third of embers work in the gaming industry, including casinos, racetracks, and government gaming and lottery operations. The remainder of our members are employed in restaurants, cafes, and other hospitality facilities.
The CAW's presence in Hospitality and Gaming has been boosted by mergers (including with CAIMAW in 1992 and the CBRT&GW in 1994) and by new organizing. The gaming sector has been an especially important target for new organizing. The CAW fully recognizes that gambling activities much be carefully regulated and managed to minimize social costs; nevertheless, those who are employed in the industry deserve the benefits and protection of a union.
