Over 1000 demonstrators stood outside the New Brunswick provincial legislature in Fredericton on November 17 to protest the government's proposed sale of NB Power to Hydro Quebec.

The event brought together a wide-range of groups, including members of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL), CAW, CUPE as well as the NDP and Green Party. The rally was emceed by NBFL Youth Vice President and CAW Local 4501 member Sebastien Bezeau.

"It was no small feat to have over a thousand people come together to send a clear message to the Premier that New Brunswick Power belongs to the people of New Brunswick," Bezeau said.

N.B. Premier Shawn Graham has been under increased fire since announcing plans to possibly sell the provincial power utility to Hydro Quebec - a deal which could be finalized as early as March of 2010.

Labour unions, political opposition parties and civil society groups are calling on the government to hold a public debate and provincial referendum vote on the proposed sale.

Opposition groups formed the Coalition of New Brunswickers: NB Power Not for Sale at a day-long summit held in Moncton on December 9.
