- Joint letter from CAW, CUPE, CUPW, PSAC, NUPGE and the Canadian Teachers' Federation to Mr. Bahram Ghasemi, Iranian Ambassador to Canada - June 26, 2009

Trade unions around the world have spoken out against the Iranian authorities' targeting of independent trade union action in recent years, and have launched an international campaign in support of workers attacked and arrested for advocating workers' rights.

The ITUC (International Trade Union Confederation), EI (Education International), ITF (International Transport Workers' Federation), IUF (International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers' Associations) formed a coalition for an International Day of Action on June 26th , which is the latest move in an ongoing campaign to secure justice and trade union rights inside Iran. Amnesty International has also backed this campaign.

Events will be taking place across Canada in the following locations:

Vancouver, British Columbia
Thursday June 25, 2009 @ 6pm
Vancouver Art Gallery steps (Robson side)

Toronto, Ontario
Friday June 26, 2009 @ 6 p.m.
Mel Lastman Square (North York Subway Station)

Ottawa, Ontario
Friday June 26, 2009 @ 12-2:00pm
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran (245 Metcalfe St.)

Repression of the fundamental rights to organize for Iranian workers has intensified and widened in recent weeks, with particularly violent reaction by security forces to the many demonstrations in the wake of the national election, and the arrest of hundreds of people.

The coalition of international labour unions is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of jailed trade union members and leaders including Mansour Osanloo, Ebrahim Madadi, Farzad Kamangar, and the annulment of the one year prison sentences recently handed down against the five leaders of the Haft Tapeh Sugarworkers' Union, as well as the release of trade unionists arrested in Tehran on May Day.

The CAW, along with other labour groups, is calling on the Iranian government in to respect workers' rights to organize, assemble and strike, put an end to persecution of labour and social activists and respect people's rights and freedoms.
