Protect Our Pensions Rally
Thursday April 23, 2009 - 12:00 p.m.
The global financial crisis and economic recession has put Canadian pension plans in an increasingly precarious state, calling into question their ongoing viability. This has prompted a firestorm of criticism by a growing movement of Canadians calling on government and corporations to guarantee support for these failing plans.
In addition, the rally is intended to draw attention to the sad fact that less than half of all Canadian workers get any sort of pension from their employer at all.
Speakers at Thursday's rally include:
Ken Lewenza, CAW President
Ken Georgetti, Canadian Labour Congress President
Andrea Horwath, Leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party
Wayne Samuelson, President of the Ontario Federation of Labour
Smokey Thomas, President of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union
Sid Ryan, President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (Ontario) and representative of the OMERS Administration Corporation Board
Len Harrison, Chair of the CAW Retired Workers Advisory Council
Morris Jesion, Executive Director of the Ontario Society (Coalition) of Senior Citizens' Organizations
Mary Jane MacKinnon, former president of CAW Local 1530, representing workers at Nortel in Belleville
Brian Rutherford, President of GENMO (General Motors Salaried Pension Organization)
