CAW Activists Rally Tuesday at Ministry of Labour Offices in Toronto for Severance Protections

CAW activists will converge on the Ministry of Labour offices in downtown Toronto at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday March 24, for the second of three pre-budget events bringing attention to the inadequacies of severance protection for Ontario workers and calling on the provincial government to establish a wage earner protection program in its March 26 budget.

Earlier today, dozens of CAW members and laid off workers demonstrated in front of Ontario Labour Minister Peter Fonseca's constituency office in Mississauga, voicing their frustration and concern over the government's inaction on the issue of severance protections.

"Reclaiming severance pay and other outstanding monies owed is one of the most critical issues facing workers during this economic crisis," said Peggy Nash, Assistant to CAW National President Ken Lewenza. "Workers shouldn't have to take drastic action to receive money legally owed to them by blockading or even occupying their plants. The provincial government has an obligation to support workers faced with this injustice and we are waiting for them to respond."

The rallies on March 23 and 24 will culminate in a mass public protest on Wednesday March 25 when hundreds of workers, from across the province, will converge on the grounds of Queen's Park at 12:30 p.m.
