Poverty activists will gather in Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's Ontario riding of Whitby-Ajax at a rally on January 17 demanding the federal government include strong provisions to tackle poverty in its upcoming budget and economic stimulus package.

Demonstrators will congregate at the Whitby Go Transit station at 2:00pm and then proceed in a peaceful march to the Whitby Public Library Courtyard where speakers will address the crowd.

CAW Local 222 President Chris Buckley is scheduled to speak, along with Laurel Rothman, National Coordinator of Campaign2000, CUPE Ontario President Sid Ryan and others.

A large crowd is expected to attend the rally, including representatives of labour unions, social justice and community groups stretching from Durham Region to Hamilton.

Organizers have also circulated a petition in coordination with the event, calling on the federal government to establish a National Poverty Reduction Plan as part of the stimulus package set to be released on January 27.
