In response to the four recent storms that have devastated Haiti, the CAW/TCA-Québec Social Justice Fund has donated $50,000 to Oxfam-Quebec's relief effort.
The TCA-Quebec, which represents a number of members of Haitian descent, is joined by other Federation des travailleurs et travailleuses du Quebec (Quebec Federation of Labour) affiliates in donating to Oxfam-Quebec's Haitian relief effort.
As of September 12, Oxfam-Quebec had delivered its first shipment of humanitarian aid which included drinking water and non-food item kits, all of which were transported by boat as access by road is still impossible.
As a result of the storms, an estimated one million Haitians are now homeless, among a population of 8.7 million. Over 8,000 people have been forced into temporary shelters and the reported death toll has reached more than 500. Reports indicate many towns have been completely devastated and so far 11,000 homes have been destroyed and 35,000 homes are damaged.
It is estimated that between 2-3 million people could face starvation.
The CAW Social Justice Fund has also made a donation of $25,000 to Oxfam Canada for its relief efforts in storm-ravaged Cuba.
