Members of the CAW Local 27 Women's Committee are hitting the road on a motorcycle ride through Southern Ontario communities from July 25-29 to raise awareness around the issue of gender based violence - an event dubbed Highway to Help.

During the last week of July, two CAW Local 27 Women's Committee members, Patty Marshall and Kim Walker, will embark on a 5-day, 2000 km, motorcycle ride that will visit workplaces in 16 communities throughout Southern Ontario. Marshall and Walker will be collecting funds raised in support of the Ontario Association of Interval and Transitional Houses (OAITH) - a group that works to educate and promote change for abused women and children afflicted by violence - and in coordination with the provincial Step it Up campaign, aiming to make violence against women an issue for the October 6 election.

Marshall, a lead organizer for the event, said she is overwhelmed by the enthusiasm shown in support of this initiative - the first of its kind for the union. Organizers have encouraged CAW members across Ontario to run individual fundraising drives in their workplaces and communities.

"We're looking forward to hitting the road and carry forward the message that we can - and will - stop violence against women," Marshall said.

The Highway to Help will make stops in the communities of Ingersoll, Woodstock, Kitchener, Milton, Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, Oshawa, Ajax, Whitby, Peterborough, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, St. Thomas and Windsor. The final stop of the ride will be in London on July 29.
